The term “shake-up” is often used to describe that season in life where it feels like everything we’ve counted is no longer reliable. One moment, everything feels stable, and the next, we’re facing trials that knock us off our feet. During these moments, friends can turn on us, problems hit us out of nowhere, and even our spouses can shock us with behaviors and attitudes we’ve never seen. It’s a very crazy time, and it’s not unheard of for our faith to take a nose drive as we fight to regain our bearings. We all know that whether it’s unexpected loss, financial struggles, betrayal, or personal failure, the storms of life will come to our front doors. Where do we stand when they come knocking? If our foundation is weak, we might crumble. But if we’re standing on the Rock, we will not be moved.
Our Firm Foundation
Jesus Christ teaches us in Matthew 6:33 (NLT), “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” This verse reminds us that our true foundation is in God, and we should prioritize seeking His Kingdom above all else. Many of us struggle to do this. Society teaches us to put our trust in the temporary pleasures of money, success, relationships, or even ourselves. These will not give us the kind of solid foundation that remains strong no matter what comes our way. They can fail us in a second; and the truth is that sometimes, we fail ourselves. Only our Heavenly Father is our firm foundation, and we can count on Him, because the truth is that He will never fail us.
Psalm 18:2 (NLT) tells us, “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.” When we stand on the solid rock, He will hold us together when everything else in life is falling apart.
The Shake-up Begins
When the shake-up begins, the effects can be similar to the impact of an earthquake. Unstable relationships, finances, threatened well-being, and other brokenness can feel like the dismantled debris it leaves in its wake. Our sense of calm is shaken, sometimes to the core, and the pieces are just too fragile for us to put back together. This is a season where we have no other choice; we have to go back to God’s Word, remember His promises, and digest them like a great feast. We desperately need this spiritual nourishment. A shake-up indicates that our souls are crying out for it.
It’s also true that in a shake-up, the go-tos and fixes we’ve relied on in the past will no longer meet our expectations. It might appear to us that people and institutions are disappointing us, but God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. We might think we know this, but the shake-up will require us to become more fully anchored in this truth.
A Shift in Focus
Isaiah 26:4 (NLT) says, “Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD GOD is the eternal Rock.” This promise should radically change the way we think, speak, and act. Our focus should shift from fear and uncertainty about all that is happening to confidence in the goodness of God. Even when our situations look bleak to us, faith should inform our choices and decisions, not fear or desperation. Sometimes, we’re so preoccupied with our circumstances that our sole motivation is getting out of what we’re in. As believers, our sole motivation should be pleasing God.
Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” God doesn’t cause the shake-ups we experience in life, but He will use what the enemy intended to make us crumble and turn it around for our good. He’ll help strengthen our faith as we shift our focus and depend on Him. Then our hearts are set on pleasing our Heavenly Father through our faith, understanding that He is faithful to reward us when we trust in His goodness.
Things will turn around, but we’ve got to keep our faith steady, trusting wholeheartedly that God is our sure and steady rock. No matter how intense the shake-up may be, we are never in it alone. God is always with us, holding us up with His mighty right hand. We can’t see all that He is doing in the background, but we can be sure, He is working everything out for our good. He promises in His Word that He’ll give us the strength to rise above the storm.
Understand that God desires you to grow deeper in your trust and dependence on Him. Everything in life is an opportunity to do this. So, when the shake-up tries to shake you down, remember that the foundation you stand on is unshakable, and as you seek Him first, He will guide you through every challenge with His unwavering love and faithfulness. Our God, the eternal Rock, will never fail us. ■
