As we dive into Revelation 6, we encounter a chapter that pulls back the curtain on a future marked by both judgment and justice. It’s a tough section to digest, but it’s also crucial for us to understand what’s ahead. This chapter shows the breaking of the seals by Jesus, the precious Lamb of God who was found worthy to open the scroll in the previous chapter. These seals unveil a sequence of events that shake the earth, revealing the consequences of a world that has turned its back on God.

The Fifth Seal: The Souls of Martyrs Under the Altar

In Revelation 6:9-11 (NLT), the focus shifts to the souls of martyrs who have been killed for their faith in Christ. The text says, “When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of all who had been martyred for the word of God and for being faithful in their testimony. They shouted to the Lord and said, ‘O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what they have done to us?’ Then a white robe was given to each of them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers and sisters—their fellow servants of Jesus who were to be martyred—had joined them.”

The martyrs in Revelation 6:9-11 are believers who have been killed because of their faith in Jesus Christ and their steadfast commitment to God's Word. They refused to compromise or abandon their testimony of Christ, even when faced with persecution and death. Before the Great Tribulation, Jesus Christ will come in the clouds and believers will be taken up from the earth to meet our Lord in the air. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NLT) tells us: “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.” Following the Rapture, many still living on earth will accept Christ, and they will be martyred for refusing to worship the anti-christ.

The verses in Revelation 6:9-11 (NLT) remind us that the cost of faith is real, and there are believers throughout history that have paid that price with their lives. This will be the case after the Rapture as well. There will be horrific suffering, chaos, and confusion on the earth and those that waited and did not accept Christ until after the Rapture will endure it. But even in the midst of this suffering, God is sovereign. The souls of the martyred will be in heaven and their cry for justice is a powerful reminder that God has not forgotten His people. He hears their cries, and His justice is coming—though it will unfold according to His perfect timing.

The Sixth Seal: Cosmic Chaos

As we move into Revelation 6:12-14 (NLT), the sixth seal is broken, and we witness an unraveling of the natural world. John describes it like this: “I watched as the Lamb broke the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake. The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood. Then the stars of the sky fell to the earth like green figs falling from a tree shaken by a strong wind. The sky was rolled up like a scroll, and all of the mountains and islands were moved from their places.”

These verses show that even the earth itself won’t escape God’s judgment. It’s a moment of cosmic shaking. Everything familiar is shaken, and no one can outrun this moment of reckoning. It’s a powerful reminder that all of creation suffers under the burden of sin and eagerly awaits redemption. As Romans 8:22 (NLT) says, “For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”

Who Can Stand?

As the chapter closes, Revelation 6:15-17 (NLT)  gives us a glimpse of how the world reacts: “Then everyone—the kings of the earth, the rulers, the generals, the wealthy, the powerful, and every slave and free person—all hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they cried to the mountains and the rocks, ‘Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to survive?’”

The people of the earth, regardless of their status, are terrified and seek refuge, but no one can escape the righteous judgment of God. This passage shows us that power, wealth, or social standing won’t protect anyone when the day of reckoning comes. Only those who have trusted in Jesus can stand, covered by his grace and righteousness.

Hope amid Judgment

Though this chapter is heavy with judgment, we must remember that it’s not the end of the story. Revelation reveals both the seriousness of sin and the incredible hope we have in Jesus. The Lamb who brings judgment is also the Lamb who offers salvation. For those of us who have said “yes” to him, we know that his judgment is not something we need to fear. God has judged us righteous because we have accepted our precious Lord and Savior and have been cleansed by his blood. It’s a reminder that God’s justice is real, but so is His mercy. As Romans 8:1 (NLT) reassures us, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

As we reflect on this chapter, we should hold fast to the promise of Revelation 7:17 (NLT): “For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.” There is a day coming when justice will be done, but there is also a day when God’s people will experience eternal peace and joy. That’s the hope we cling to.

Revelation 6 is a wake-up call for all of us. It paints a clear picture of what’s coming, and it urges us to be ready. This chapter isn’t meant to scare us, but to stir us into action—into living our lives with urgency and purpose, knowing that God’s plans are unfolding right before our eyes. ■
