In many ways, our perceptions on wealth and value have been significantly shaped by societal standards. We often chase after the latest designer brands and measure worth based on a person's outward appearances, such as what someone is or isn’t wearing. The lesson from 1 Samuel 16:7 (NLT) when the prophet, Samuel, judged based on looks rather than character, instructs us to see things from God’s perspective. This verse tells us, “But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don't judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” This verse reminds us to look beyond superficial traits and focus on what really matters; our hearts towards God.
In Jesus' letter to the church of Smyrna in Revelation 2:8 (NLT), he identifies himself as "the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive." This statement emphasizes both his eternal nature, and his victory over death. He lives! Jesus was resurrected from the dead through the power of the Holy Spirit, demonstrating his supreme power and the fulfillment of God's promises. His resurrection is not just a historical fact but a living reality that assures us of Jesus Christ's divine authority, and his eternal existence.
As the risen Lord, Jesus wants us to recognize that he is intimately aware of our lives. He sees all that we do, including the suffering, trials, and tribulations we endure on this earthly plane. His Words to Smyrna highlight his deep understanding of their suffering. In his letter to them, he reminds us that, despite the difficulties we encounter, we are never unseen or forgotten.
Jesus told them in Revelation 2:9 (NLT): “I know about your suffering and your poverty—but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan.” This verse reinforces the purity and truth of God’s perspective expressed in 1 Samuel 16:7. It highlights that while human judgment often focuses on outward appearances and material conditions, God's evaluation of our true worth is based on spiritual richness and faithfulness. In the face of adversity, Jesus acknowledges the depth of their suffering and assures them of their true, eternal wealth. He emphasizes that God's view transcends superficial judgments, recognizing and establishing the profound value of genuine faith and perseverance.
In modern times, many believers are captivated by celebrities, their wealth, and the prominence of the churches they attend. We often find ourselves awestruck by these external displays, yet none of this impresses our Lord and Savior. While we are enamored with outward appearances, Jesus is concerned with what’s on the inside. He values the condition of our hearts and the authenticity of our faith far more than any superficial measure of success or status.
In Revelation 2:10 (NLT), he encourages believers not to fear the suffering we’ll endure because we are his followers. Those who belong to the synagogue of satan do his dirty work and come against those that stand for God, but we must not be moved. Jesus promises, “But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life.” This is the crown that awaits all of us who remain faithful and true to God despite the suffering and persecution we face. Even when the pressure is intense and persecution seems overwhelming, Jesus assures us that our faithfulness, even in the face of death, will be rewarded.
In Revelation 2:11 (NLT), Jesus says, “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death.” This verse conveys the importance of listening to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and applying it to our lives. In John 16:13, Jesus teaches us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. When we follow the Spirit, he will always lead us on a victorious path.
The "second death" refers to eternal separation from God. Those who remain faithful and overcome the trials and challenges of this life will be spared from this ultimate fate. Jesus assures us that victory in our spiritual journey with him means protection from eternal death, affirming the promise of eternal life with him for all of us who remain true to our faith in God.
Jesus’ letter to the church in Smyrna gives us powerful encouragement and a perspective that strengthens our resolve to cling tightly to him. Even as we face suffering and persecution, we are reminded to focus on what truly matters—our faithfulness and the condition of our hearts toward God. Jesus promises that our perseverance through intense trials will be rewarded with the crown of life. He is fully aware of everything we endure on earth and reassures us that we are never alone. As he tells us in Revelation 1:18 (NLT), “I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.” This promise engraves upon our hearts his eternal power and control over life and death. We have nothing to fear. He is our Lord, Redeemer, Savior, and King! He offers us hope and confidence that he is with us through our struggles, and because he loves us, we will always have his unending support and ultimate victory.■
