Cameron, a 24-year-old recent college graduate, sat at his desk one evening with his Bible open and a notebook full of unanswered questions. He had recently said, “I feel like God is talking to me, but I can’t make it out. I want to study the Bible to learn more about Him, but it just feels confusing.” He meant it—his heart was in the right place. But without realizing it, he was trying to unlock spiritual truths using natural understanding. He hadn’t yet been born again, and he didn’t know that there’s a Teacher—God’s Spirit—who was waiting to help him understand it all.

Many people can relate to Cameron. They want to know what’s in the Bible. They feel a tug toward God. But the Words seem hard to grasp, or the truths feel just out of reach. That’s because spiritual things require spiritual help. Jesus said in John 3:3, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” Being born again is more than a church phrase—it’s a spiritual rebirth that allows us to receive the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit is our teacher.

In John 14:26 (NLT), Jesus told His disciples, “But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative--that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.” God never intended for us to read Scripture without His help. He wants us to understand Him. He’s not hiding the truth—He’s actually inviting us into it. First Timothy 2:4 (NLT) reminds us that God “wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth.”

Romans 10:9-10 (NLT) tells us, “9 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.” This is how we become saved, and once we receive salvation, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and something powerful begins to happen. God opens the eyes of our heart. As we begin to read His Word, the Spirit helps us to comprehend its truth, and we begin to understand it. It becomes personal, relevant, and life-giving.

That’s why the Apostle Paul prayed this prayer for the believers in Ephesus in Ephesians 1:16-18 (NLT): “I pray for you constantly, Asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.” These believers were already saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, but Paul prayed that they would grow in their understanding of God’s Word, and that their hearts would be flooded with light. It is so awesome to know that this is available to receive from our Heavenly Father, and we can know Him increasingly as we seek to spiritually grow in Christ.

It was more than a general prayer—it was a prophetic declaration of what believers can and should walk in. Paul didn’t just want them to know about God; he wanted them to have a deep and personal revelation of Him. This kind of revelation comes when the Holy Spirit shines His light into our hearts and minds.

When Paul says, “that your hearts will be flooded with light,” it’s a powerful picture. Whether it’s ignorance, pain, pride, or confusion, darkness is what blinds us. But God’s light brings clarity. Psalm 119:130 (NLT) says, “The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.” When the Holy Spirit brings light, things that were once hidden start to make sense. We begin to see who God is, who we are in Him, and what He’s called us to do.

And check out the phenomenal reality of what this light helps us see: “the confident hope He has given to those He called.” It’s not a shaky hope or a maybe. It’s a confident, assured, anchored kind of hope. Romans 5:5 (NLT) says, “And this hope will not lead to disappointment.” Hebrews 6:19 (NLT) puts it like this: “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.” That kind of hope only comes when we truly know the One who has called us.

When we realize we are God's “rich and glorious inheritance,” it shifts how we see ourselves. We are not just struggling believers trying to figure things out—we are treasured, chosen, and empowered by the Spirit of God. We are sons and daughters of the King, and He desires to give us insight, direction, peace, and purpose. All of that starts with revelation.

Cameron eventually gave his heart to the Lord. He surrendered to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and that decision changed everything. The same Bible that once felt distant and hard to understand became a well of life. Now, instead of confusion, there’s revelation. Instead of doubt, there’s a faith that is growing continually. This is what happens when we submit to the Teacher—the Holy Spirit. He reveals God’s wisdom in a way that reaches not just the intellect, but the heart. He personalizes truth for us, showing us how Scripture applies to our real lives, our daily choices, and even those tough struggles that we endure sometimes.

When the Holy Spirit begins to teach you, it’s more than an increase in knowledge, it’s about transformation. He makes the Word come alive. Passages you’ve read a hundred times suddenly meet you right where you are. The haziness goes away, and you realize that God has been speaking the whole time—you just needed the Spirit to tune your ears to hear Him. ■
